Most travel to or from Bucarest centres around Gara De Nord (Bucharest North). Although not the most modern of Europe's major train stations it has improved over the last years. It has a selection of shops, supermarkets, fast-food outlets (including inevitably a McDonald's), and kiosks. To enter the station you either have to show your ticket or pay a small fee (0.5 RON). Be very careful of your belongings on trains; gypsies and beggers often wander between carriages begging or trying to sell wares, and no doubt keeping an eye out for unguarded coats and bags. The toilets are often filthy, except sometimes in the inter cities, so go before you go. Types of Train: There are four types of train servicing the Romanian rail network. Personal
trains are the dirtiest and slowest, stopping at every cowshed on route. Buying tickets: Tickets can be purchased from any station or CFR ticket agency. Fares are based on distance, class and train type. The main Bucharest CFR ticket office is located near Cismigiu Park two stops down from Piata Universitatii (take the side road next to McDonalds, then the first left and you are there). Destinations: Trains from Gara de Nord run to all the major Romanian cities and many European locations such as Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade and Istanbul.
