Taxis are readily available all over the city. They can be flagged down in the street, picked up outside stations or in major piatas, or called to your door from one of the companies listed below: Fares: On the side of any taxi a list of prices will be display. The first price is normally the starting price (pornire), then the price per killometre and the stationary price. Prices vary from firm to firm so be sure to check them out before getting in. A typical price per kilomtre is 1.2 RON but beware of some taxis (especially outside the large malls, hotels and train station) which have outrageously high rates. Scams: As with any major city in the world the cab drivers are prone to taking roundabout routes. Not much you can do about this unless you know where you are going. There is no night rate, so you do not need to fear that particular scam, but some cabbies have a little switch which when engaged will accelerate the rate from about 1 RON/km to 3 RON/km. Keep an eye open for this. Cabbies will sometimes refuse to take you if you are not going far enough, or not in the direction they particularly want to head in - no problem, there is normally no shortage of cabs. Beware of illegal cabbies touting business at the airport or the train station. Choose one of the larger firms instead, most of whom will also give you a receipt. Companies: Alexander
