Surprisingly Bucharest has a very good selection of restaurants, both traditional and international. There is a heavy emphasis on Romanian and Italian cuisines, although Oriental food seems to be becoming increasingly popular.

Romanian food tends to be cheap, a little heavy and served in large portions. Schnitzels, sausages, chops, stews, soups and cabbage dominate the local cuisine which focuses largely on pork and chicken dishes. The chain of four restaurants all called La Mama is very popular with the locals for its good prices and belly-filling portions and this is underlined by the fact that it’s necessary to have a reservation almost any day of the week.

The restaurants in the north of the city tend to be more expensive as they cater for the international clientele staying in the business-orientated hotels or working at the large industrial business parks between the airport and the city. The centre of town and its back streets host many smaller, cheaper restaurants. The main hotels all have an array of international options if you are less incline to discover.

Prices vary considerably as one would expect, but a three-course meal for two with a bottle of wine will probably set you back a little under 20 Euro in the cheap Romanian restaurants and 40 Euro in the more popular international restaurants. It is very feasible to eat cheaply in Bucharest if you stick to local food and drink. Pizza especially tends to be cheaper usually costing about 4 Euro for a medium-sized pizza.

If looking for a tasty snack you can stop off at one of the prolific patisseries found on almost every streets selling both sweet and savoury delights. Alternatively, stop of for ‘clatite’ (pancakes).

Must-try Romanian dishes:

Sarmale: Minced pork rolled up in sour cabbage leaves
Mici: Grilled meat balls served with mustard
Mamaliga: A kind of polenta normally served with sour cream and cheese
Ciorba de Burta: Tripe soup
Papanasi: Doughnuts serve hot with jam
