High
Streets
Unlike many
major capitals in Europe, Bucharest seems to lack any concentrated shopping
district, its major retail outlets being distributed around the town and
its malls.
The
stretch between Piata Unirii to Piata Romana, passing through Piata Universitatea,
is probably the closest thing to a high street to be found in town. Starting
from Unirii you have the Unirii shopping mall (see the section on Malls),
which contains many reasonably priced shops. This stretch between Bucharest’s
three main piatas, commonly known as Magheru, has numerous
clothes shops of varying size, fame and price range. Around Piata Universitatea
you’ll find some second-hand book shops, a couple of which (located
in the subway under the piata) stock a few English-language books.
Running parallel
to Magheru is Calea Victoriei. Here you’ll find
many of the top range high street stores, being close to some of the major
hotels. In the west of the city is Calea Mosilor, another
longish shopping street with a wide range of stores, restaurants and facilities.
Calea Dorobanti in the north serves the richer districts
of Baneasa and Floreasca with its mini-malls, high-end fashion outlets
and trendy cafes.
