Bars/Cafes/Coffee Shops

Bucharest has a wide selection of bars and cafés, of varying themes and styles. Although there is no particular nightlife centre to the city, the Lipscani area just north of Piata Unirii is starting to be developed into something of the sort. Much of the action occurs along the main boulevard between Piata Unirii, Piata Universitatea and Piata Romana. Here one may find many of the large hotels and their restaurants, casinos, a few bars in the side streets particularly toward to northern and southern ends, and the main nightclubs.

Prices vary considerably from place to place. Some of the student/alternative clubs such as Club A and Fire have reasonable prices with a beer setting you back about 1-1.5 Euro. The expat hangouts such as the Harp and the Dubliner, the omnipresent Irish bars, tend to be a little pricier at around 2-3 Euro a drink, as do the more upmarket clubs and bars. On the whole a night out in Bucharest need not cost you a lot if you pick your places carefully.

The major problem with the city at night is that unlike many other European capitals the lack of a centralized nightlife zone means the ill-lit streets can be deserted and a little dangerous at night. Try to stay in a group and if possible call a taxi to the venue to take you home. The main drag through the centre of town is often patrolled by pimps and other characters of ill-repute. Keep your wits about you, don’t flash your money around, don’t stop to talk to anyone who looks suspicious and organise good transport to and from your venue. There’s no need to be paranoid, but a little common sense goes a long way as it does in any major city.
