Hanul Lui Manuc

Cuisine:
Romanian
Prices:
Moderate
How to get there: Right on Piata Unirii. When in the Piata, look to the north towards the main road that runs towards Piata Universitatea. The Han is the large build on the left with what looks like a thatched roof. You have to go down the side road to the left of the building to enter from the rear.

Review: The original Bucharest Restaurant, Hanul lui Manuc was built originally as a 'Caravansarai' to host guests to the city. It still serves this purpose today having been renovated in a previous decade. On entering the Han you have a choice of either eating or taking refreshments in the charming courtyard, sitting at a more formal table on the balcony running around the inside of the courtyard, or entering the 'crama' or cellar restaurant/bar.

Despite being an obvious tourist trap, the Han serves good food at reasonable prices. It's a pleasant place to have a coffee after the concrete heat and bustle of Unirii and thus is also popular with Romanians who don't fancy McDonalds or KFC.

The food is typically Romanian - the usual soups, mamaliga, schnitzels, and grilled meats and the wine list is reasonably-priced. The services is as ever very Romanian but by now you've probably got used to that. If you visit Bucharest then I'd visit the Han at least once, even if it's just for a cold beer.
